Stages of work with receivables

The likelihood of a client paying accounts receivable depends on two factors:

  • Good faith (fair practices)
  • Solvency

Let’s see how these factors can be assessed.

Verification of good faith (fair practices) as per the databases of the Federal Tax Service (FTS)

There are many official and unofficial services as well as databases to verify counterparties, each with some limitations which should be understood and considered. Based only on information from counterparty databases, the following is riskily assumed:

  1. Counterparties will work with you the same way they had before with other suppliers;
  2. The financial position of counterparties does not significantly change over time.

Checking the FTS registers and similar services is only the first stage of screening of the worst sham companies and scammers. Given that the Russian market is very unstable, it is extremely risky to make decisions regarding customers based solely on a counterparty reliability screening. Moreover, the reliability of a counterparty in the past does not guarantee its solvency in the future as any company may encounter some difficulties. So, after checking counterparties in the FTS databases, two questions always remain:

  1. What to do if a client that used to be reliable in the past ends up in a precarious financial position?
  2. What about new companies with no data in any databases?

Going on a hunch, you risk getting a bad receivable which could become at the very least a problem or in the worst case scenario could get you out of business.

So, the usual check of counterparties in databases is necessary but not sufficient to make informed decisions about counterparties. In addition to such check, the financial indicators of counterparties should also be reviewed. To this end, we have developed and provide a service to assess, monitor and improve payment discipline to reduce the risk of non-payment of accounts receivable.

Solvency check and monitoring of financial indicators

It is useful for all companies to be able to predict the solvency of their clients in order to keep accounts receivable under control. This is particularly relevant when a company:

  • must decide on cooperation with a new counterparty;
  • operates under long-term contracts with payment after delivery of goods or provision of services;
  • has a long production cycle.
